Humorous column writing in Urdu journalism has emerged as a vibrant genre that blends entertainment with thoughtful critique of social, political, and cultural behaviours. Among its most respected voices is Nasrullah Khan, whose work transcended mere amusement to provoke reflection through elegant satire and linguistic charm.
Nasrullah Khan’s columns were marked by spontaneity, simplicity, and refined humour. He addressed current affairs, politics, and human behaviour with insight and grace, exposing contradictions, inequalities, and selfish interests in society. His writing style balanced wit with seriousness, making his columns both engaging and intellectually rich.
His most celebrated series, Adab Arz, gained immense popularity for its clever characters, sharp remarks, and literary finesse. These columns offered readers a unique blend of humour and cultural critique, elevating the genre to a form of literary expression.
Yasmeen Farooqi’s book Fakahiya Column Nigari aur Nasrullah Khan, published by Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu, Karachi, is a significant scholarly contribution. It provides a comprehensive analysis of Nasrullah Khan’s literary background and his role in shaping humorous column writing.
