This article deals with the first-ever complete rhymed English translation of Diwan-e-Ghalib by Servat Rehman. This translation was published with the name “Diwan-e-Ghalib: Complete Translation” by the Ghalib Institute, New Delhi, in 2003. This book is significant due to the fact that it is the first complete rhymed translation of Mirza Ghalib's Mutadawal Diwan and includes a number of renderings from Nuskha-e-Hamidia, Urdu-e-Mualla, and other works. There are some problems in the poetic translation of Ghalib’s Poetry in this book. Translation of poetry is not such an easy task. If it is Ghalib’s poetry, it becomes the responsibility of the translator to translate on a rhyming ground. It has been analysed on a technical & linguistic basis. Servat Rehman seems to be a little bit successful in transmitting the meaning, but fails to maintain the real and faithful impact of Ghalib’s poetry.

1. Yousaf Hussain Khan: (1902-1979), a renowned acquaintance with Ghalib and
Iqbal excelled in Urdu, Persian, Arabic and French. “Urdu Ghazal”,
“Hafiz aur Iqbal”, “Rooh-e-Iqbal”, “Ghalib aur Iqbal ki mut’harik Jamaliyat”,
“Ghalib aur Aahang-e-Ghalib”, “Fransisi Adab ki Tarikh” are his preceded
books. Adding to these, he translated Ghalib’s Persian and Urdu ghazals in
English language. “Urdu Ghazals of Ghalib” was published by Yousuf Hussain
Khan’s life, but “Persian Ghazals of Ghalib” got published after his death.
Though initial and partial translations of Ghalib’s poetry were published in
“Comrade”, but Yousaf Hussain Khan is the first one who translated “Dewan-e-
Ghalib” comprehensively. Yousaf Hussain Khan has translated the entire
prevalent Urdu Diwan of Ghalib with the title of “Urdu Ghazalz of Ghalib”,
published in 1977 by Ghalib Institute, New Delhi. The arrangement of the text
In the mentioned book is according to “Nuskha-e-Arshi”. Adding to the Ghazals of the prevalent Diwan, verses were also chosen from “Nuskha-e-Hamidia”, “Urdu-e-Muala ky Khatoot” and “Biyaz-e-Alai”. Yousaf Hussain Khan has mentioned in the preamble that he started to translate this poetry in August 1974 and completed it just within five months, in December 1974. He professed his love with Ghalib, that wasn’t a rush of two or three years, only rather he was
to be in love with Ghalib for about half a century.
