Abstract

Pandit Brij Narayan Chakbast was a renowned poet, exceptional prose writer, and esteemed critic in Urdu literature. His notable critical work, which earned him fame, is the essay on Gulzar-e-Naseem (Masnavi). Most of his critical writings focused on poetry criticism, but he also explored Urdu novels as a subject of discourse. A prime example of his critical acumen is his essay on Pandit Ratan Nath Dar Sarshar, published in the May 1940 issue of DARPAN magazine. Although the article employs an argumentative and defensive style, Chakbast maintained moderation and balance throughout. This pioneering study remains invaluable in understanding Sarshar's work. Chakbast evaluated Sarshar's novel-writing art with measured reasoning, significantly contributing to the context of Sarshar's acquaintance. His profound vision and analytical criticism demonstrate his mastery of fiction criticism principles. Sarshar's Fasana-e-Azad holds a brilliant place in Urdu novel history, making it unforgettable for Urdu novel critics. Chakbast's extensive and balanced discussion reveals multiple facets of Sarshar's novelization, influencing later fiction critics' writings.
