A Study of Urdu Translations of Ghalib’s Persian Letters

Abstract

A substantial part of Mirza Ghalib’s Persian prose consists of his Persian letters, which he wrote to his friends from time to time. These letters provide valuable insights into Ghalib’s life and personality as well as the political, economic, and social conditions of his era. Moreover, his Persian correspondence offers detailed accounts of the various aspects of his journey to Calcutta, including the hardships and difficulties he encountered during the journey.

Over time, several collections of Ghalib’s Persian letters have been discovered, and efforts to locate and compile further letters are still underway. Translations of different collections of these letters have also been published. It may therefore be argued that almost all the available Persian correspondence of Ghalib has now been translated into Urdu.

The present study focuses on the Urdu translations of Ghalib’s Persian letters. Among the various forms of Ghalib’s Persian prose, his letters constitute the largest body of work. They vividly demonstrate the distinctive qualities, elegance, and artistic richness of Ghalib’s Persian epistolary style. Through a critical examination of their Urdu translations, this study seeks to explore how the literary, stylistic, and expressive characteristics of Ghalib’s Persian correspondence have been rendered in Urdu.
