The Tradition of Urdu Translation in Punjab (1900-1950)

Translation plays a vital role in the development of any language. It is also paramount in terms of promoting and expanding the Urdu language. The tradition of proper and regular translation in Urdu began after the establishment of Fort William College. This tradition flourished over time, with Punjab emerging as the Centre for the art of translation in the first half of the twentieth century. The prominent scholars in translation include Khan Ahmad Hussain, Muhammad Haleem Ansari, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan, Maulana Ghulam Rasool Mehr, Makhmoor Jalandhari, Abid Ali Abid, Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj, Inayatullah Mashriqi and Kalimullah. Their scholarly contributions particularly include the translations of the works produced in Arabic, Persian and English. The translations by these scholars expanded Urdu literature and introduced it to various new genres. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the tradition of Urdu translation in the first half of the twentieth century.
